  Cannot Detect

  1. Read the complete message displayed in the yellow bar at the top of the display. For touchscreen models, you may need to click Detail to see the entire message.

  - If "Cannot Detect," go to step 2.

  - If "Cannot Detect Ink Volume" go to: Cannot Detect Ink Volume

  2. Remove and examine the affected ink cartridge(s).

  a. Open the ink cartridge cover.

  b. Press the lock release lever(s) to release the affected ink cartridge(s).

  c. Remove the affected ink cartridge(s) from the machine.

  d. Verify the model and the INKvestment logo is present on each affected cartridge.

  Ink Cartridge

  - If it is an INKvestment TANK LC406 cartridge, go to step 3.

  - If the INKvestment TANK logo isn't present, go to step 5.

  - If the model number is any other LC part number, these ink cartridges are not compatible with your model machine and will cause the message "Cannot Detect" to be displayed. To clear this error you must install a new, unopened genuine Brother INKvestment TANK LC406 cartridge.

  3. Is there a small green chip/circuit board on top of each affected cartridge?

  Ink Chip

  - If yes, go to step 4.

  - If no, go to step 5.

  4. Make sure all affected ink cartridge(s) have been removed from the machine.

  a. Close the ink cartridge cover.

  b. Remove the power cord from the AC outlet.

  c. Wait approximately 15 seconds, then reconnect the power cord.

  d. Once the machine boots to the ink cartridge screen, open the ink cartridge cover and slowly and firmly insert each ink cartridge into its appropriate color-coded slot in the order indicated on the error message.

  e. Close the ink cartridge cover.

  - The LCD may ask you to verify that the ink cartridge was replaced. Select yes.

  - If "Cannot Detect" is no longer on the display, your machine is functioning properly. The issue has been resolved.

  - If "Cannot Detect" is still on the display, your machine will require service. Go to Warranty and Service Options.

  5. If the INKvestment Tank logo and/or the green chip isn't present, the cartridges are likely refilled or non-Brother generic ink cartridges and the machine may not be able to detect the cartridge. We recommend using genuine Brother supplies for optimal performance and print quality. The use of non-genuine supplies may affect print quality.

  To clear the "Cannot Detect" error, you must install a new, unopened genuine Brother INKvestment Tank LC406 cartridge.
